 The brown and gray staining in the Ambrosia Maple is caused by the maple tree being infested with ambrosia beetle larvae. The beetle larvae bore into the wood and live inside the tree. Defecation from the larvae causes the streaked staining in the wood. The small holes in the wood are where the beetle larvae bore through. The beetles are not so good for the lumber industry but for the wood turner, the staining creates some very interesting turned color formations in the wood.
